The story behind the design
Hand-finished coasters featuring Samuel Dixon's 18th-century embossed pictures of birds, each with a different design.
Samuel Dixon's embossed pictures of birds and flowers. Samuel Dixon, the Dublin artist, owned a "picture ware-room" on Capel Street, north of the river Liffey, where his apprentices hand-coloured embossed papier-mâché pictures of birds and flowers, sold in black and gold japanned frames. His "Foreign & Domestick Birds" appeared as a set of twelve in 1755.
Each picture carried a dedication and a description of its subject on the reverse, to protect Dixon against imitators. He sought the patronage of the Duchess of Dorset, soon after the Duke arrived as Lord Lieutenant in 1753, and of Elizabeth, Duchess of Hamilton, one of the celebrated Gunning sisters from Co. Roscommon.
Made in England by Lady Clare to our exacting specifications, with a hard, heat-resistant melamine surface (to 150°C), an extra-strong core of sustainably sourced eucalyptus and a natural cork back. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Every set arrives in our presentation gift box.
Size: each coaster measures 10 cm x 10 cm.
