Our story

46 years of Georgian Enlightenment craft

Heritage is a family business. For 46 years we have brought masterpieces of Georgian decorative art to the dining table, as placemats and coasters made to be used every day.

The beginning

Founded in Dublin, made in England

Heritage was founded in Dublin by Audrey Emmerson, who learned the placemat construction process created by David Bauer in the 1970s. For 46 years our family manufactured the mats in house.

Today Lady Clare produce our tablemats to our exacting specifications. We have consolidated our efforts and refinements with the fantastic craftspeople at Lady Clare in England, so every set meets the standard our customers have relied on for decades.

Our designs come from the artistic heritage of the British Isles and classic European works. They have been exhibited at the National Craft Fair in Dublin, the Spring Fair at the NEC in Birmingham and trade fairs across the United States.

Dublin, 1755

Samuel Dixon's Foreign & Domestick Birds

Samuel Dixon owned a "picture ware-room" on Capel Street, north of the Liffey, where his apprentices hand-coloured embossed pictures of birds and flowers, sold in black and gold japanned frames. His set of twelve "Foreign & Domestick Birds" appeared in 1755, under the patronage of the Duchess of Dorset and Elizabeth, Duchess of Hamilton.

Paper mosaicks, 1772–1782

Mrs Delany's flower collages

Mary Granville (1700–1788) spent her happiest married years in Dublin. Encouraged by her second husband, Dean Patrick Delany, she began cutting coloured paper into botanical pictures at the age of 72. By 1782, when failing sight made her stop, she had completed nearly one thousand. She bound them in ten volumes, now in the British Museum in London.
